The Society organises a programme of professional and social events throughout the year. The programme is intended to encourage discussion, strengthen professional relationships and foster friendship among those with an interest in the legal systems and legal professions of England and Wales, Australia and New Zealand.
Our Programme
Our annual programme usually includes four fixed events:
- The James Crawford Lecture on public international law
- Our Annual Dinner, usually held in late November in Lincoln’s Inn Old Hall
- A wine tasting, usually in early Spring
- A summer drinks party, usually held in June or July
Other events include lectures, panel discussions, receptions, dinners and other occasions that bring together members of the judiciary, practising lawyers, academics, students and others with an interest in the Society’s work.
Topics reflect current legal developments and issues of shared interest across our three jurisdictions. Wherever appropriate, events are organised in partnership with law firms, chambers, universities and other professional organisations.
In addition, all our members are members of the Britain-Australia Society. A list of their currently planned events is available on their website.
Past Events
Recent guests of the Society have included the Honourable Julia Gillard AC, former Prime Minister of Australia; the Rt Hon Lord Neuberger, former President of the UK Supreme Court; the Rt Hon The Lady Hale, former President of the UK Supreme Court; and Dame Sian Elias, former Chief Justice of New Zealand. A full record of past lectures, dinners and receptions, together with photographs and recordings where available, is available on our resources page.
Professional and Social Engagement
The Society regards its professional and social activities as complementary. Formal events provide opportunities for informed discussion of legal developments, while receptions, dinners and other social occasions enable members and guests to establish and maintain professional and personal relationships.
Many events are open to guests as well as members, particularly those with an interest in the Society’s objectives.
Keeping Informed
Details of forthcoming events are published on this website and circulated to members by email.
If you would like to receive information about future events, please consider joining the Society or contacting the Committee.
